ESDiT Research Line

Intercultural Philosophy

This line studies how non-western philosophy can help us to provide (different and better) answers, to the research questions of ESDiT. This line contributes to all program objectives, but especially to objectives (2) on conceptual disruption, (3) on new methods of ethics and (5) on implications for practical philosophy.

About ESDIT

In the ESDiT programme, we aim to innovate the ethics of technology so that we can critically evaluate and guide the development, introduction and use of current and future socially disruptive technologies. To pursue its aim, the ESDIT programme has nine research lines.

Description of This Research Track

The Intercultural Philosophy Research Line explores how non-Western philosophical traditions, such as Confucianism, Buddhism, and African philosophies, can inform ethical responses to socially disruptive technologies (SDTs). By analysing concepts like personhood, moral agency, and the human condition, this research line aims to address challenges posed by SDTs through inclusive and innovative philosophical frameworks. For instance, it studies how Confucian ideas of relational personhood can guide ethical approaches to social media and mindfulness. This aligns with ESDiT objectives of conceptual innovation (Objective 2) and developing new ethical frameworks for SDTs (Objective 3).

Get involved

Join us in shaping a more inclusive philosophical discourse by contributing to the Intercultural Philosophy Research Line. Through workshops, reading groups, and symposia, we offer a platform for engaging with non-Western traditions and rethinking key ethical concepts. Whether you are interested in Indigenous philosophies, Buddhist approaches to attention, or comparative philosophy, your perspectives can help expand our collective understanding and drive impactful research. Reach out to collaborate and help redefine the ethics of SDTs!

Project Description
This PhD will use Confucian philosophy as a conceptual resource in answering how people can flourish in a world that is being increasingly proliferated by digital technologies. It will use a Confucian-inspired framework for human flourishing drawn, from the Great Learning, (Da Xue 大學) to organize its inquiry. This framework identifies four spheres of relations that constitute a good or flourishing life. These are the spheres of the “self,” the “interpersonal,” the “political,” and the “world.” For each of these spheres, a digital technology shall be investigated. Specifically, an ethical issue about that technology will be explored. The dissertation shall then assess the issue through a Confucian lens and propose practical recommendations, with the goal of addressing the issue in a way that can improve the digital good life or well-being.
